If a registration number hasn't been on a vehicle, you need to renew a V750 Certificate of Entitlement that is due to expire
Applications to renew can only be made by the Purchaser (named on the V750) and the earliest you can apply is 28 days (4 weeks) before the expiry date.
You'll get a renewal reminder if you're not using the personalised registration number and your right to use it is about to run out. It is the Purchaser's responsibility to ensure DVLA records are kept up to date with correct address details.
The V750 is valid for 10 years. It can be renewed for a further 10 years and there is no fee to apply.
DVLA must receive your application on or before the date of expiry, or the rights to the personalised registration number will be lost.On receipt of your renewed V750, you must destroy all previously issued Certificates of Entitlement as these are no longer valid and cannot be used online or to notify DVLA of any change.
How to apply
Renew online:The quickest and easiest way to renew your entitlement is through your online account here.
If you already have an account, log in with your User ID and select the option to renew entitlements. You can find your User ID in the confirmation email we sent you when you set up your online account.
If the registration was purchased from a DVLA auction and it remains on a V750, create a new account using the link above, then add the registration number to your account using the V750 certificate number. You will need to select the view your expiring entitlements option, which will only appear when you have a registration that is due for renewal.
Once processed, you should receive a new V750 within 2 weeks.
If the V750 is not available, you will need to renew by post.
Renew by post:Applications to renew can be made by completing the renewal section of the V750 Certificate of Entitlement. The earliest you can apply is 28 days (4 weeks) before the expiry date.
If the V750 is not available, please provide a written request to renew the entitlement with an explanation as to why you do not have the certificate.

If the V750 has already expiredIf you are in possession of an expired V750 Certificate of Entitlement, you will not be able to renew as the rights to the registration number will have been lost. The law does not allow DVLA to renew any entitlement that has expired. You will not be able to re-purchase the registration number and there is no right to appeal.
If the registration number has ever been assigned to a vehicle, you can find all the information relating to the renewals of V778 certificates here. -
DVLA does not provide the actual number plates when you make a purchase. We will send you a certificate of entitlement (V750) which you will then need to use to get number plates made with a number plate supplier. You can find your nearest supplier using https://www.gov.uk/number-plate-supplier
The registered number plate supplier will ensure the plates are made to the correct legal standard. More information about number plates can be found at https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates

When you purchase a personalised registration, we will send you a V750 Certificate of Entitlement, which you will need to assign the registration to a vehicle. If you are purchasing it as a gift, set the account up in your name and address. When making the purchase, you can add a nominee, this should be the person who is or will be the registered keeper of the vehicle it's going to be assigned to.
Once the registration is assigned to a vehicle, the entitlement is transferred to the registered keeper of that vehicle as shown on the V5C Registration Certificate.

Although there are millions of registrations available to buy direct today, you might want a registration that does not appear in your search results. If this is the case, we might be able to make that registration available. To do this, the registration:
- must be a valid format.
- must never have sold previously.
- must never have been issued to a vehicle previously.
If you have a specific registration in mind, or a preferred combination of letters and numbers, please use our online email service to contact us.

No, DVLA only sells registrations that have never been issued or sold before. If a registration has been on a vehicle in the past, and even if that vehicle has been scrapped, that registration will not be available to purchase from DVLA.
