Bidding at a DVLA Auction

The DVLA holds several auctions each year, containing up to 2500 registrations in each auction. There are two types of auction called Live Venue Auctions and Timed Online Auctions.

Live Venue auctions are held 3 times a year at specifically selected venues throughout the UK.

Timed Online auctions are held 6 times a year with all bidding taking place online. More details on how our auctions work and how to register as a bidder can be found at www.dvlaauction.co.uk.

Our auctions include distinctive dateless, current and older style registrations with starting prices from just £70.

We make the Live Venue auction experience as enjoyable as possible. Bidding in person continues to be the most popular way to bid. However, if you can’t make it to the auction, we offer the option of free telephone and internet bidding or you can submit an absentee bid. Plate Styles

'Current' style plates are the registrations currently used for new registrations and are made up of the form; 2 letters, 2 numbers and then 3 letters.

AA68 ABC

'Prefix' style plates are the registrations that were used prior to 2001 and consist of; 1 letter, 1-3 numbers and then 3 letters.

A123 ABC

'Suffix' style plates are the registrations that were used prior to 1983 and consist of; 3 letters, 1-3 numbers and then 1 letter.

ABC 123A

'Dateless' style fixed price plates are registrations that can be assigned to any age vehicle and consist of; 3 letters and 3 numbers.
